CHAPTER ONE
"Stop, Lucky, I can't take it anymore!" giggled
Elizabeth Webber as she grabbed her aching sides.
Laughing, Lucky responded with, "It's not my fault you spilled the
popcorn--again." HIs smiling face suddenly changed to upset. "Liz,
I'm sorry. I didn't mean that--"
"Lucky, it's okay," Liz said as she touched his arm to show she
meant it.
There was a silence for a moment as they both remembered the last time Elizabeth had spilled the popcorn. It was a few months ago, when Lucky had brought a movie over to watch so Liz wouldn't have to be alone. She hadn't slept in days because of the rape, but feeling so secure around Lucky, she had dozed off during the movie. But she drempt the same nightmare that she always did; it was the one of that horrible night in the park. Lucky had tried to wake her up, but she was so frightened that she knocked the popcorn all over the couch.
Liz was first to break the silence. "You know, it's
times like this when I almost forget that night ever happened." She
looked down at her hands.
"It's because you are so strong, Elizabeth. I'm serious. You are so
much better now." It was Lucky's stare that made her look up.
"It's only when I'm around you that I feel strong." Liz spoke
her thoughts with a bit of shyness.
"You know I'd do anythng for you, Liz. Anything." Lucky gave
her that look, the one he always did when he was concerned for her.
"I know," she said softly as she looked deep into his blue eyes.
They were the ones that gave her security. Those same eyes she drowned
in every tom she looked at him.
"I, um, better get going. I'm finally beginning to tolerate my da--
my father again, and not coming home might not help us on the idea of trust."
As they walked to the door he turned to Elizabeth and said, "I'll
be here, tomorrow, at 9:00 sharp, okay? Elizabeth, it's gonig to fine.
I promise."
There are those eyes again, thought Liz as she nodded to him. "Ya,
I'll be ready. Good nght. And Lucky? Thanks again, for everything."
She paused, then added, "I had a really good time tonight."
Lucky smiled at her. "Me too. And there will be lots more times like
this. Good night Liz." As he walked out the door he silently hoped
that Elizabeth had caught on to what he had meant. After tomorrow, they
could focus completely on the future and the plans they'd make.
* * *
Liz lay in bed later that night thinking of the next day. How will I do
this? What if tomorrow, I find out-- "No," Liz said strongly
as she cut off her thought. "I can't worry, I won't." She tried
to convince herself of this as she drifted off into a restless sleep.
CHAPTER TWO
Lucky was stending at the front door of Elizabeth's house.
He looked at his watch. "8:45. I'm so early, but I feel like I need
to be here now." He hadn't slept at all the night before. All he could
do was think about Elizabeth. "Stop it Spencer. Be a man; you have
to be strong for Liz." And with one deep breath he rang the doorbell.
Liz ran to answer the door, knowing it would be Lucky. She had been ready
for almost half an hour.
"Hi Lucky." She smiled nervously as she closed the door behind
them. "I jsut couldn't sleep anymore, so I got ready early."
"Me too," Lucky managed to spit out. He felt like getting sick
because of his nerves. Lucky looked over to see Elizabeth still smiling
in his direction. God she is so brave, he thought.
They stood there for a second, until Lucky asked, "Ready?" Before
he realized what he was doing, or why he was doing it, Lucky held out his
hand. Elizabeth was surprised by hs gesture, but found herself taking his
hand just as quickly as he had given it to her.
"It'll be okay," Lucky said as they started walking. They walked
in silence for a several minutes as Lucky realized that he was trying to
convince himself just as much as he was doing it for Liz.
They reached Mercy Hospital still in silence, and stopped at a bench just
outside the main doors.
"Lucky, what if it's positive? What if I'm not as Lucky as last time?
What if--" Her eyes filled instantly with tears.
"Hey, no what if's, remember?" Lucky took both of Liz's hands
in his as he fought back tears of his own. "You're going to be fine,
Liz. This will be the last time. I know how scared you must feel, but it'll
be over soon." He gently wiped away the tears that had fallen down
her face.
Elizabeth felt his warm touch, and for a moment she believed that everything
would turn out alright. He was so concerned; she could see it in his eyes.
She took a deep breath as she stood up, trying to regroup. "Sorry,"
she looked at him and smiled weakly. "I think I'm ready."
Lucky smiled back at her as he opened the large door. He wasn't exactly
sure what else to do or say. As she walked by him, he whispered softly,
"I know you are."
What's taking so long, Lucky thought to himself as he
nervously waited for Liz. She had stepped in to the doctor's office almost
fifteen minutes ago. "I need to see her. I need to make sure that
she's alright," he spoke aloud.
Just as he put down the magizine that he was aimlessly flipping through,
he heard the door open. He stood up, waiting for Liz to walk out of the
room.
But the doctor came out. "Who came with Elizabeth Webber?" she
asked as she walked towards the waiting area.
"I did. Where is Elizabeth, is she alright?" Lucky could feel
his heart pounding. The doctor pointed to the room she had just come from.
Lucky walked over and stopped in the doorway. Elizabeth's back was to him,
but he could tell that she was trying not to cry. Look at her, Spencer,
she is so brave. Can't you be more like her? Lucky couldn't bring himself
to say anything out loud.
Just then, Elizabeth turned and stood up so they were both facing each
other. Liz just smiled and nodded, and instantly Lucky embraced her.
"Oh, thank God, Lizzie. You're okay," Lucky exclaimed through
tears.
Liz smiled and through her sobs managed to say, "I know. It was like
you said, Lucky. I'm okay; I'm HIV negative."
Lucky hugged her even tighter, not daring to let go. "Lizzie, do you
know what this means?"
It's over, Lucky. It's finally over."
They pulled back just enough to look each other in the eyes. Liz could
see the relief and happiness in Lucky's eyes. She hadn't seem that in a
very long time.
You're truly okay, Liz." Lucky couldn't help saying it over and over.
They both smiled as he pulled her back onto his arms for another hug. Elizabeth
smiled to herself as she rested her head against his chest.
CHAPTER THREE
They had decided to celebrate by ordering from Kelly's
and taking it to the park. Ever since Murty had been arrested, and because
of Lucky, Elizabeth was able to go to the park without the rape being the
only thing on her mind.
Taking a sip of his cola, Lucky asked, "Hey, what are yoy thinking
about?"
Liz looked a little embarrassed for seeming so obvious. "Oh, nothing."
She smiled and looked away.
"Come on, Lizzie, please?" Lucky smiled as he pretended to pout.
How can I resist those eyes? Liz thought to herself. "Okay, Spencer,
you win. I was just thinking about today...when you called me Lizzie. You've
never called me that before. This is so stupid of me to say, but well,
it was-- I don't know. It was just different." Oh, as if I just said
that, Liz regretted to herself.
Lucky looked straight at her, his eyes becoming serious. "it just
sort of came out that way. It just felt right." He paused. "What
am I saying? What am I trying to say?"
Their eyes were locked.
"Elizabeth, when I found you in the park, the first
thing I felt was hatred. I swear, I would have killed that guy if I had
the chance."
She interrupted. "Lucky, it's not--" He gestured her to stop.
"No, let me finish; I need to get this out. Then all I could feel
was guilt. You needed me, Liz, and I tried to be there for you. I wanted
to do all I could, but it was never enough."
Liz could see the pain and guilt flooding in his eyes. "But Lucky,
you have helped me. More that you'll ever know."
"Elizabeth, you've come so far, because you're so strong. You fought
your way back Liz, all by yourself. You beat this. You no longer needed
me to be there, but I still wanted to be there. I want to be here with
you, Lizzie."
She continued to hold Lucky's stare, even though she was a little embarrassed.
This was just way too important. "Lucky, you were the one who helped
me through this. I don't know where I'd be if it wasn't for you. You gave
me the strength I never thought I had. All those times you just sat there
with me, telling me over and over that it would be alright. WE beat this,
Lucky...together." She paused and became a little shy. "And I
like it when you call me Lizzie."
Lucky smiled back at her. "I was just there, Liz. You fought to beat
it." He moved his arm so that she was leanign on him.
Liz smiled, feelig completely confortable with him.
"Lucky?" She asked, looking up to face him.
"Ya?" he answered, grinning back at her.
"Can we stay like this?"
His blue eyes sparkled as he gently kissed the top of her head. "Of
course, Lizzie. For as long as you want."
